To have consistent style within the comic, I prefer to draw them in scenes from other moments in the narrative or other scenarios that may seem relevant to the character. This helps to grow an attachment to the character and to settle into a style that feels comfortable. I love this little caterpillar.
A comic challenge to illustrate an existing narrative within established shapes. Choosing to work left to right then back right to left reflected the disorientating themes of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, especially when paired with the juxtaposition of a conventionally children’s book style.
